Wednesday, 28 October 2009

GRANADA REGION DIGITAL SWITCHOVER NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2009KENDAL TRANSMITTER UPDATE – TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2009 As you know, the Winter Hill transmitter group (Granada region) switches to digital on 4 November and 2 December.    This affects viewers in South Cumbria who receive their television signals from Winter Hill or one of its relays in North Lancashire or Furness.       In the early hours of Wednesday 4 November, the Winter Hill transmitter and all its relay transmitters will be shut down to allow the switchover process to start.   BBC2 analogue will be switched off and one group of BBC digital channels will start up in its place.     Winter Hill is expected to restart by around 06.00 but many of the relays will not restart until later in the day.     In the early hours of Wednesday 2 December, the Winter Hill transmitter and all its relay transmitters will again be shut down to allow the completion of the switchover transition.   The remaining analogue services will be switched off and the rest of the digital services will be started up in their place.   Winter Hill is again expected to restart by around 06.00 but many of the relays will not restart until later in the day. Viewers who receive their television signals from one of the relays (in Cumbria: Millom Park; Barrow Town Hall; Roose; Dalton in Furness; Urswick; Penny Bridge; Backbarrow; Cartmel and Staveley in Cartmel) will receive around 15 Freeview channels for the first time.    Viewers whose signals come directly from Winter Hill or Lancaster will be able to see additional commercial channels. IMPORTANT INFORMATIONKENDAL TRANSMITTER ENGINEERING WORK – TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2009 On Tuesday 10 November, engineering work will take place at the Kendal transmitter group in South Lakeland, following the completion of stage 1 of the Granada switchover.  Services will be off air for a number of hours in the early morning, and all viewers who receive their TV from the Kendal transmitter will need to retune their Freeview equipment in the morning. The Kendal transmitter and its relay transmitters at Coniston, Crosthwaite, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Kendal Fell, Millthrop, Sedbergh and Windermere will be off the air while the work is being carried out.  The Kendal transmitter is expected to restart around 0600.  The other transmitters are expected to restart around mid morning – except for Coniston, which should restart around lunchtime. BBC services at the Kendal transmitter have been located on a temporary frequency since the Border Digital Switchover, in order to prevent interference with other services in the Granada region. Following the Granada digital switchover, services at Kendal are now being moved to their final frequency. Viewers who need help with retuning can contact the Digital UK helpline on 08456 50 50 50 or visit digitaluk.co.uk/retuning   John AskewRegional Manager, Tyne TeesDigital UKa: PO Box 13424 I Kelso I Roxburghshire I TD5 8WUe: john.askew@digitaluk.co.ukm: 0778 606 7758 w: www.digitaluk.co.uk/retuning

3P's August 2009 Update

Wednesday, 19 August 2009

The 3Ps Group is obviously very disappointed not to be allocated funds to proceed to the second phase of project planning. With only £20 million available each year the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is only allowing schemes to proceed to the next phase if they are certain there is no risk of them failing to go ahead.

Following the sad news, Jayne Kendall of SLDC and Ron Shapland were invited to meet officers of the HLF in Manchester to discuss improvements which would be needed to the application in order to improve the chances of success.

It was emphasised that any project needed to be of a high standard as funding applications were six times the funds available. In particular the money to be provided by SLDC, which is linked to the progress of the Berners Vision Development, needed to be fully secured and available for use as match funding. The lack of the Clare Lane Bridge was also seen as a disadvantage in that the Park Road Gardens were not easily accessible to the Promenade.

The HLF are now requiring additional documentation previously needed at the second phase with the first phase application, namely a Green Space Strategy for all SLDC parks, gardens and open spaces; a complete Audience Development Plan and a 10 year Management Plan. There were also a number of other suggestions, all of which will be discussed at the next 3Ps Full Group meeting on the 10th September at 2pm in the Victoria Hall.

The Project Committee has discussed the possible date for a re-submission and because of ensuring the reinstatement of the Clare Lane Bridge and confirmation of the match funding from Berners Vision it is likely to be August 2010 at the earliest.

There is no intention of giving up following this initial setback due to the importance of the Promenade and Gardens to the well being of Grange.

Cartmel Peninsular Local History Society - Report on 26th June meeting

Monday, 10 August 2009

Our first members workshop evening was held on 26th June.   Lots of interest was shown and the "Villages Project" was born.   The purpose of this project is to encourage research within the Society and to produce, as an outcome, a history or histories of the villages within the CPLHS area.   A short presentation was followed by discussion on different ways in which this could be achieved.   The initial village study would include Allithwaite, Kents Bank, Ravenstown, Field Broughton, Flookburgh and Meathop.   The Society would also encourage members who perhaps have done little or no research themselves, but would like to come along to find out more.   The next meeting will be held in Cartmel Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 9th September.
