Open Day - Allocation of Land Local Development Framework Maps.
28 February 2009
Grange-over-Sands Town Council is holding an open day for the public to view maps showing sites in Grange which may be nominated by the District Council as suitable for development. The event will be held in the Victoria Hall, Main Street, Grange-over-Sands, LA11 6DP, on Saturday 28 February 2009, from 10am to 4pm. Visitors will be able to leave comments about the maps for consideration by the Town Council
South Lakeland District Council is working on a set of documents called the Local Development Framework (LDF) that all Local Authorities are required to produce to replace the current Local Plan. It has issued a “Discussion Paper” on the production of an “Allocations of Land DPD”, one of the portfolio of documents which will comprise the LDF. Attached to the Discussion Paper, is a set of “Sites Under Consideration Maps” with potential development sites marked in red. There is also a “Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report”, which describes the proposed methodology for evaluating alternative sites in terms of economic, social and environmental sustainability.
The background to the Sites Under Consideration Maps is the requirement, determined by the Regional Spatial Strategy for the North West, to provide an additional 8,800 new dwellings in South Lakeland (outside the National Park), and 98 hectares of employment land, in the period 2003-2025, Of these totals, SLDC has suggested, in its Core Strategy Options Document issued in May 2008, an allocation of 880 homes and 10 hectares of employment land in the Grange Area (a “Key Service Centre”). The Town Council opposed these suggestions in its response to the Core Strategy Options.
Of the 880 dwellings, 125 had already been built by early 2008 and there were planning consents for 95 not yet implemented. This left 660 to be provided between 2008 and 2025. Of these, 132 (20%) have been earmarked for Allithwaite and Cartmel., leaving 528 for Grange over the next 17 years.

Wednesday, 11 February 2009
The Planning Inspectorate has today announced its decision on the future of footpaths over the railway in Grange at Clare House and Berner’s Lanes. The decision to add these two routes to the definitive footpath map, made in draft by the County Council last year, has been confirmed after a Public Inquiry to hear an objection from Network Rail. A further objection by South Lakeland District Council had earlier been withdrawn.
